We
have a very serious animal over-population problem in Playa del Carmen.
A team of local volunteers and veterinary professionals donate their time and
skill to vaccinate, sterilize, and when financially possible, provide acute
medical care to homeless animals and to pets whose owners cannot afford local
veterinary clinic fees. Whenever possible, we try to education to the locals
regarding the importance of sterilization, vaccination and kindness towards
animals.
Some of the locals and local businesses are involved with helping the cause. We
at Seamonkey Business have been highly involved in this cause.
We capture wild cats and dogs, sterilize and release them.
This is the only humane solution to the problem. When able to afford it, we will
also vaccinate or care for the injured and sick. Whenever possible, we try to
find loving homes for the homeless.
Your donations are used solely for supplies and medications. Everyone involved
volunteers his or her time.
This is what we are up against…
*Average number of litters a fertile cat can produce in one year: 3
*Average number of kittens in an average feline litter: 4-6
*In seven years, one female cat and her offspring can theoretically produce
420,000 cats.
*Average number of litters a fertile dog can produce in one year; 2
*Average number of puppies in an average litter: 6-10.
*In six years, one female dog and her offspring can theoretically produce 67,000
dogs.
Statistics provided by the Humane Society of the United States.
Even a small donation goes a long way for us since all professional care is
donated. We only need to purchase the medications and supplies needed.

We at Seamonkey Business have
taken an active role in this cause and have fixed over 112 (as of Jan 2004)
stray cats on our street alone …while adopting 7 of them to add to our family of
now 8 cats here in Playa del Carmen. In addition, we feed over 35
strays outside our home. The positive changes we have seen in the population
problem in our immediate area has really given us hope to reach out further in
the community. We take it one at a time.
